This set of photographs is the photographic chapter of Starry Sipping Dew.
This is my room—a rented space in Beijing where I spent a year and a half in perhaps the most difficult period of my life. Post-production of my feature film consumed me; I was barely surviving. The film has been in the making for nearly three years. I am on the brink of collapse. Meanwhile, the man I like remains elusive: always close, always distant.
This photograph documents a threshold—between collapse and reconstitution, between unbearable pressure and the possibility of endurance. The rented room becomes a site of philosophical investigation.
The work refuses sentimentality. It does not celebrate suffering but examines it as constitutive to becoming. The photograph registers material conditions of precarity: constrained window, blank wall, enforced intimacy with architectural limitation—not metaphors but phenomenological facts.
The room is both prison and refuge, constraint and sustenance. To photograph it is not to beautify but to bear witness: to the quotidian texture of survival, to the unglamorous persistence required to create meaning from diminishment. An archive of endurance.
